Does The Truth Work In Our Lives?

Read Matthew 7:15-20

If man really were left without a simple practical test of religious truth, he would assuredly be in a sad plight - but happily this is not the case. Jesus, the most profound, and at the same time the most simple and practical teacher the world has ever known, has provided for this need, and has given us a universally applicable test for truth. It is as simple and direct as the acid test for gold. It is the simple question--Does the truth work in our lives? This test is so staggeringly simple that most clever people have passed it over. Truth heals the body, purifies the soul, reforms the sinner, solves difficulties, pacifies strife. There is no such thing as undemonstrated understanding. If you wish to know how you really stand spiritually, look about you at your environment, beginning with the body. There can be nothing in the soul that is not demonstrated sooner or later in the outer, and there can be nothing in the outer that does not find some correspondence in the inner.  By their fruits ye shall know them. (Matthew 7:20)

We certainly cannot expect to go on breaking the laws of the plane on which we live, and expect prayer to compensate for this foolishness. (Ecclesiastes 9:10)

As I have said before, Emmet Fox is a favorite of mine because his writings are so practical, so convicting. As most of us around here are finding our way when it comes to health and fitness we need to take these words to heart and think on a deeper level about truth. Who doesn't know the truth about gluttony and its consequences but do we understand, are we demonstrating this truth? Do we think we will be spared the consequences of not living the truth that we want to believe we understand? Maybe we don't understand after all? If we truly understand would weight loss and fitness be such a struggle, such an on again off again undertaking? Are we just giving lip service to this?

The fruits of some bloggers tell us they really don't understand. Sometimes I have produced fruit that showed I didn't really know the truth or care about the truth because I was being too proud to admit my lack of conviction. We are all good at the talk but how about the walk?

Let's align ourselves with the truth, look at our bodies for the fruit of what we are demonstrating, and decide if our inner world and our outer world are matching up - they always do eventually.

Is This The Right Approach?

This Chef is being treated unfairly I think.

The decision is being made solely upon his weight. The kicker is that he has lost weight since coming to New Zealand. I wonder if blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure numbers are being considered in making this decision.

I also wonder that if New Zealand is concerned about health risks if they also deport those with various treatable cancers or those with Type I diabetes.

New Zealand is the third fattest nation following America and Mexico. We would be deporting about 1/3 of our population if we took that approach.

I also know we have to start somewhere and there will always be those who have good numbers but weigh too much. There will always be those at a healthy weight but have high blood pressure or are diabetic.

And since I am such a know it all, I also know the government pretty much screws everything up when they try to control people's lives. I also know that when people don't feel in control of their own lives, they often weigh too much. I would be willing to bet there is a correlation between those on public assistance and obesity.

For some reason I am at a loss to explain, we seem to address the wrong problem. I see this in education. We know we have a problem but don't want to face what has to be done or deal with the opposition calling those who would treat the real problem heartless and cruel. We think more technology will do the trick. We mess with the school calendar. We absolutely must work around the lunch schedule and athletics. We keep throwing taxpayer dollars at it. How would you say all these liberal policies concerning discipline, self-expression through no dress codes, and this attitude of "rights" and "fair" is working for us? We are destroying competition and the desire to achieve because those who would rise to the top must be held back because somebody's feelings might be hurt.

We need people to be held accountable. We need to stop separating consequences from behavior. I know it seems unfair when those who commit crimes are found to have been abused children or raised by a single parent or have been disadvantaged in many ways. "It's easier to build a child than to repair an adult". We are going to have to start a lot earlier than when a child becomes truant or gets expelled. We can't save them all unfortunately. Our schools are so bad in some inner cities that I think we need the military to help with discipline. Those who are trouble makers should spend some time in boot camp with men who don't care about their little egos or their rights. It needs to start early and it needs to be convincing. Can't you just hear the liberals and the race baiters on this one?

I seem to have gotten off my original topic. It happens.

Award Questions

Thank you for the award Jasmine. Here are my answers to your questions.

Everybody - I have been trying to answer comments by they aren't getting published. I have tried commenting on the blogs of others and it doesn't work. I do apologize because I always reply to my comments so hopefully this will be cleared up soon. 

1) Do you speak any other language, other than English?

I took Latin in school and was very good at it if I do say so myself. It is not a spoken language however and I even think it is called a dead language but it certainly does contribute to verbal skills.

2) Do you have any serious regrets?

Yes. I regret not continuing with the piano. I regret not taking physical fitness and health seriously at a much younger age. I have been mediocre in way too many facets of my life. I have settled for average too often.

3) Have you ever broken a bone?

Not unless you count stubbing my toe or jamming a finger so badly it had to be taped to the digit next to it. I have never had to have an x-ray because a broken bone was suspected.

4) If you could change one major law, what would it be- and why?

I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. There would be no gay marriage if I could have the final say so. I believe the breakdown of the traditional family is the root of all of our problems in America. It's silly to me to even have to discuss this. Marriage is not only about love - it's a part of it for sure but sex is for males and females to create more of our own kind. I am not against gay people; I am for traditional marriage.
I read that 3 1/2% of Americans are gay. We change laws for this small number? I know of an aunt and a niece who live together to share expenses. Shouldn't they just get married now and get the tax benefits? There are 2 brothers living together or 2 sisters or uncles and nephews, why not get married and get the tax benefits now that marriage will mean nothing? Scripture tells us that a man will leave his parents and cleave to his wife. We are paying a dear price in America through our youth because of  "the sins of the fathers being visited upon the sons to the third and fourth generation". Enough of that.

5) Have you ever had a pet that was truly a terror, but you loved it anyway?

Right now we have a male German shepherd that I could kill with my bare hands sometimes. He is 2 years old and still a pup. However, he is very affectionate, can't get close enough, but I might as well talk to a tree as tell him to stop, or stay down, or get back, or whatever. I have yelled at him until my throat was sore. I am ready for him to be out of this puppy stage. 

6) Are you a home body?  If so, why?

I am. Now that I am retired I love how relaxing it is at home. I can work in my yard and vegetable garden all I want. I get up without an alarm clock and take a nap if I want and go to bet when I get tired. Love it.

7) Do you sometimes break the law if nobody gets hurt?  Or do you always toe the line?

I do things like speeding, no seat belt, blow through stop signs out in the country if I can see all ways so that would be a "yes".

8) Have you ever discovered something that you absolutely love that you thought you never could or would?

Nope. Can't think of anything anyway.

9) What is your guiltiest pleasure?

I guess it would be spending too much money on fabric and flowers.

10) What is the biggest surprise of your life?

I must have a pretty boring life. It takes a lot to surprise me evidently because I can't think of anything. 

11) If you needed to live somewhere outside of the United States, where would you choose?

I have always thought I would enjoy Japan. I have also always wanted to go through a big castle in Europe somewhere. Europe is such a mess financially so I will probably stick with Japan although I have heard New Zealand is a neat place to go.

Why Do We Suffer?

We suffer because we have a lesson to learn.

I read this thought and decided to expand upon it because I am coming to realize that I cause my own suffering and a huge part of the reason for the suffering is because I didn't learn the lesson the last time I suffered for the same reason.

If experience is the best teacher it begs the question of why I have to keep experiencing the same discomforts repeatedly and still not learn the lesson that is there for me and quite frankly is right in my face. How dense must I be to keep doing self-destructive things, suffering the consequences, and then doing the same thing again?

One of our most vulnerable times is after a victory or an extended length of success seeing weight loss, improvements in fitness, and success with self-discipline. We let our guards down; we didn't learn the lesson. We didn't seal the victory.

We must all ask ourselves toward what outcomes are our lives moving?

Are we learning any lessons?

Aerobics Class

Who Knew?

The Journal of the American Medical Association has some astounding findings.

Turns out if people are awake longer they eat more. Go figure.

Weight gain was also linked to being sedentary.  How amazing :-) is that?

We are stuck in a rainy, cool pattern. I just canned 35 quarts of green beans. I could not believe it. It was the first picking of 3 rows and there will probably be at least two more pickings. It will be tomatoes after that. The peach tree is loaded as well. I am doing the "3 sisters" method with my sweet corn. This is what you do:  first, plant your sweet corn and when it is about knee high plant a vining bean that will use the sweet corn for support. I used white half-runners. You then plant some kind of squash between the rows. I used butternut squash on the first planting and spaghetti squash on the second two. The squash vines will cover the ground blocking out weeds and holding in moisture.

It's a Free Country

Marion has a great post about freedom. I agree.

You and I are free to get as fat and out of shape as fast as our emotions/eating/sedentary lives can get us there.

How many times have you heard someone say, "It's a free country"? They are usually referring to someone else's choice as to how they live their lives. It's the same for us.

Let me say here that I am so thankful to our men/women in uniform who fight so that we can be free. Many of them have sacrificed their lives. Many have lost limbs. Many have come home so emotionally disabled that life is never the same again for them. I like a couple of sayings regarding this - "Land of the free because of the brave" and "If you can read this, thank a teacher; if you can read it in English, thank a soldier".

Do we want to be thankful to the soldier because he/she fought for our right to be unhealthy? Not me. Why not start each day thankful that you CAN be healthy if you choose because after all, it is a free country.

Would we have a different attitude if we were forbidden to exercise? What if there was an extra tax on fresh vegetables like our wonderful government would like to do regarding soft drinks?

Are you and I aware of the freedom we have to live lives that are so much more than those who live in Syria or Iran for instance? We are taking it for granted because it hasn't cost us anything. I think only about 35% of the people who are eligible to vote take the time to cast their votes. Apathy is a very dangerous thing. I saw a YouTube video where people on the street were asked why we celebrate July 4. Many people don't know. America is headed to socialism which will be followed by communism and it's because people are willing to let the government run their lives and take care of them. There will soon be more people in the wagon (dependency) than there are people pulling the wagon (taxpayers). There are some states already in that position. Enough politics.

Just remember that today you and I are free. At the cookout today or even if we are at home, we are free to eat junk all day and sit on our butts. It's a free country. We are also free to use our brains, appreciate our many freedoms, and eat sensibly, get our water in, and get in some exercise.

It's a free country.

I Told You So

Don't you hate when somebody warns you about something, you don't listen, and then you have to listen to "I told you so"?

Results are difficult to argue with. What kind of results have you and I been getting lately? Are your days and my days orchestrated by fear or by determination? If I feel fear when facing a situation, I usually am not very successful. Determination is a different situation. Both of these emotions will get results. Remember that Winston Churchill said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself". This is true for us as well.

We are born with only two fears - the fear of falling (notice how a baby will throw his or her arms out when being laid down backwards), and the fear of loud noises (a loud noise will scare a baby and the baby cries). All of our other fears have been learned. 

It seems to me the most successful people at weight loss and maintenance are the ones who are proactive. They don't wait until stuff happens to them, they make the stuff happen. There is a goal and a reason to do the right thing with health/fitness. I have the read the blogs of people who are trying a new eating plan and they say "I hope this works". I can go ahead and tell you this person will fail.

YOU decide what lifestyle changes you need to make. The first one I made was to stop eating sugar. I began drinking the water and exercising at least 3 times a week. How hard is that? There were no journals, no check-off sheets, no new equipment like a FitBit (whatever that is). This was a success and I found that cutting that many carbs got enough out of my system that I craved it no longer. I then began working on other carbs such as bread, white potatoes, etc., and began enjoying wonderful salads, fresh fruit in season, and lean meats. So what if I had a naked cheeseburger at a cookout; I was losing weight. It was a small price to pay.

My personal pet peeve is #14 - sometimes I think if I read another comment that says somebody is "amazing" for having lost a pound or started over after the third binge this month or exercising three times this week I will bash my computer. Really? (see #13 - similar). I have seen #25 used in addition to "I'm not going to beat myself up over it" or "I'm OK with it" or "I'm more than a number on a scale". These are just slogans that people use when they decide it's not fun anymore to eat everything in sight; it's time to blog about the amazing revelations that have come from it, repent, and get even more amazing. I still kind of like #6; it's funny as well as #8.

If you binge, I understand. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt (another list item?) Binging is an emotional response to things we don't even understand. It begins before we know it and then we don't know how to stop. It must run its course. I wish I could tell you why. I can think of a couple of bloggers I know who really suffer over their binges. I know they truly want to stop.

This is different than the person who uses an event like FitBloggin' as a reason to binge because FitBloggin' will be the new beginning. I read some blogs where the conversation was between two people who weigh more this year at FitBloggin' than they did last year at FitBloggin' and just made light of it. I don't think either of these two was serious, just immature. One was just fishing for support and validation that she was amazing. This has nothing to do with emotions. It has everything to do with insincerity.
