Burning Calories

Did you realize (I didn't - guess I just hadn't thought about it) that you burn most of your total calories for the day while sleeping and sitting around? I guess if we think about it that makes sense. That hour at the gym that might have burned 300 - 600 calories is about 1/4 of the total calories we burn in a day. In my earlier post about The Fallacies of Fat this author made that point and it does make sense.

I tend to focus on the time I spent in my step aerobics class or body sculpt. I do realize that the 300 calories I used while working out is not the net calories burned because I would have been burning calories anyway sitting at my sewing machine for example rather than in my aerobics class.

I also think this is why people misjudge what calorie benefits that come from exercising. On another note, some food plans allow activity points or give what has to be done to make up for an ice cream cone for example. That is just playing games I think. I know I have eaten something I shouldn't and then did the math for what I would have to do to burn those calories I just ate. Do we really have enough time or stamina to make up for eating a whole pizza? Doubt it.

Norma - This One's For You

I couldn't believe all these were on my facebook page and they screamed "NORMA".


When I am on top of my game and getting my exercise done as well as staying within the low-carb boundaries and drinking my water I feel like this cat. I just see myself in a better light. The good things I do trump the negative feelings I have about the flab, the brown spots on my skin, and the wrinkles around my mouth.  If I am not doing all the right things the flab, brown spots, wrinkles bother me a lot more.

I question a compliment a lot more when I am off plan; I want to contradict the person complimenting me. If I am on plan, I am cheered by kind words. I agree with them.

Death Panels

Death panels were ridiculed when Sarah Palin brought up the subject. Health care will have to be rationed under Obamacare or The Affordable Health Care Act to make it sound harmless. I know they tell us differently but let's be realistic.

Socialized medicine may not be as wonderful as they would like us to believe.

I do understand that at some point we must discontinue the efforts. Should that be a family's decision along with a doctor's advice or the government's decision?

Even if a person does smoke or is obese will their treatment costs differ much from someone with a handicap from birth who needs constant care? What will happen to the handicapped under Obamacare? Will people who cannot contribute to society be seen as an expense that we cannot afford?

After all, we just sent F-16 fighter jets along with some tanks to Egypt - let's get our priorities straight.

Crap - Really?

I remember when some kids in the family stayed at my house for an overnight once. Two boys - they wanted to know where the cookies and pop were. They were out of luck. Their mother and father are obese and once of these two boys is obese as well. Mom and Dad lost a decent amount of weight with WW but have gained it back plus some. Pop is one of the food groups at that house.

But then I notice that the other boy and an older boy that didn't stay overnight are slim but drink pop and eat cookies. I do think some people are predisposed to being obese although that's not an excuse. There are those who don't gain no matter what they do.

I had the center on our basketball team in one of my classes. He was tall and very slim. He wanted to bulk up so he could stand his ground better during games. He told me what he ate trying to gain weight. I told him I would weigh 400 lb. if I ate like that.

I am predisposed to being obese. I know it. I deal with it.

Stand Up Desks

Have you heard about these?

It seems like a good idea to me. I know one burns more calories just sitting up opposed to lying in bed. One burns more calories standing up than when sitting or lying. The reason is the muscles are used more for standing just to hold one upright.

Moving around is another matter. Someone carrying a lot of extra weight will burn more calories moving around because of carrying that load. However, carrying a lot of weight will limit how intensive that movement can be and how long it can be done. The lighter person with good muscle strength will ultimately win the calorie burning contest. I saw a study done once where children on a playground were watched. It was noticed that the the heavy group and the normal weight group ate about the same amount of calories but the normal weight kids moved more when out at recess.

I am thinking of the obese in my family. Without even considering calorie intake the obese ones just move less. How about your friends and family?

What's So Good About Wrong Choices?

Let's think of our wrong choices and how they have brought us to the right place.

Those of us who feel like we finally have a handle on this for the most part may be able to look back and see how the behaviors in the past have helped bring them to this point of being in control. There is often some discomfort necessary to make us finally see our way out and lay down behaviors that have caused us so much pain.

Remember the pain of discipline as a child? It is what shaped our behavior. It took some of us longer than others to get the point. I know my dad didn't have to discipline us much but we knew he would and we also remembered that it was something we didn't want repeated so we obeyed the rules (pretty much).

Still Dreaming?

How many of us are still dreaming about being able to have our cake and eat it too? How many of us think the scale won't notice if we keep trying to sneak in some unwise eating? How many of us sneak in some unwise eating and then get upset when the scale does notice? How many New Year's Resolutions are already only a memory?

Until we resign ourselves to what has to be done and not view it as an experience in torture, success will be elusive. Even though I have given up carbs for the most part and almost all of the time, I am so thankful for what I CAN have, not what I can't. I have beautiful salads even though they are without cheese and croutons. My avocado plate with sweet potato and hard boiled eggs is great. I say go out and buy yourself a beautiful place setting for just for you. I bought a plate from a potter here in Centerville that is slightly rounded up like a pie plate and it is great for salads and my other meals. My diet really is somewhat repetitive but I don't mind because I like it and it's healthy and it helps me lose weight. I have my raisin bran muffin every morning. I don't miss very many days having a big salad. My Quest bars are another pretty much daily thing as is an apple. I did cook up some pork loins last night. I did not bread them but fried them to brown them (yes, in bacon grease - adds flavor. I seasoned them well with a blend of spices that I have. I browned them and then put the lid on the pan, turned down the heat, and slowly cooked them until tender because they were very thick. I drained them well and they are ready to go for a meal adding a couple of vegetables. I often have some 90% dark chocolate as a dessert.

No cupcakes.

Something to Share

I am on call all day on Saturday and Sunday (7am - 11pm). I got a call first thing out of bed this morning and drove to Dayton (1 hour each way) and found a locked building so I could not go in to see what was wrong. I got back home and was walking in the door and my pager sounded and I had to leave for Wilmington (2 hrs. each way) - GAH!

Anyway - I listened to a health show on a local radio station while driving  that is hosted by a chiropractor who believes in strengthening the body, aligning the spine, and supporting the body's efforts to heal itself. One man called in about his insomnia and the host told him to lose weight (285 lb.) and give up sugar. The host said eating sugar was like throwing gasoline on the metabolism. It sets it afire (blood sugar spike). I had never thought of it that way.

He also said people do not die of the flu; they die with the flu. Their systems are already compromised and the flu is more than they can overcome. That got me thinking as well. He also said getting a flu shot makes one more susceptible to other strains of the flu that the shot does not cover. I know I have heard people say that if they get the flu shot; they get the flu. A nurse told me that they inject a dead virus to create the immunity so they won't get the flu but evidently these people get another strain.

Is exercising now a regular part of your life? You have changed your lifestyle.

Do you thirst for water and drink it regularly rather than sodas or other beverages? You have changed your lifestyle.

Have you cut way back on the carbs, especially sugar? You have changed your lifestyle.

These things mean you now have a healthier lifestyle. Why would we want to go back to the misery we have already been through?

If we change our lifestyles, all we have to do is wait on the body to catch up and it will.

Different Kinds of Hunger

I have been wanting to eat everything that couldn't run faster than me today.

This morning I had that nauseous kind of hunger, kind of a sick feeling. I ate my bran muffin and it still wasn't enough so I had a banana with some peanut butter on each bite.  I ran the route today and had my protein food bar, my trail mix, and my apple gone way before noon. What is wrong with me?

I came home and had lots of almonds and two squares of dark chocolate. I figure if I am going to eat it is going to be the good stuff - what I usually eat.

I have gotten the water in today and will have body sculpt tonight. Hopefully I won't be wanting to eat everything that isn't nailed down when I get home.

I have trouble with mouth hunger and chew a lot of sugar free gum.

When I have head hunger I get something hot to drink or some water. Head hunger can be dealt with by just shoving something in the face like some coffee or some water or some of my sugar free cappuccino.

The "just empty" hunger is not too hard to deal with because there will soon be a growl and it's time to eat.

Then there is the panic kind of hunger from an insulin response in my opinion. Eating too many carbs will do this. Eating too many carbs makes the body want MORE MORE MORE.

I missed more exercise classes than I should these past couple of weeks and am now back full steam ahead. My muscles have been sore and they are healing so I am blaming this hunger on that.

Heard a good tip for saving money as I listened to talk radio today on the route. It's easy - don't spend $1 bills. Each evening put them away somewhere. I have always saved my change and quite a decent amount can be saved over time and is not missed. I had not considered also saving $1 bills as well. I am sure I can have Christmas taken care of by starting today doing this. How about you? Join me?

I ordered a pair of these.

They are expensive but it's a treat for myself. It's a company started by Glen Beck and the jeans are made entirely in America and 10% of the profits goes to charity.

I ordered the classic fit which is a somewhat fuller cut. I didn't used to be able to wear men's jeans. The waist wouldn't come up to my waist and then gapped. Here recently I accidently put on a pair of my husband's jeans because they looked like mine. They were really comfortable. My son just gave me a pair of his jeans and I am wearing them although I need a belt. Duane's jeans are 36 x 30 and the ones my son gave me are 38 x 32. The above jeans come in a 34 length so I will probably have to hem them. I ordered a 36 waist - I don't know how that compares to the women's size 14 I wear now. I got my new size 12 jeans up and could wear them but not too comfortably yet. I am going to be perfectly happy with a size 12.

When I think about straying I have been thinking, "My jeans are coming".

Yesterday and Today

I've been on a pretty good clip here lately and can tell my clothes are looser. I won't be weighing until February 1 because it is still too emotional for me to even weigh every week. I just don't need to be focused on that number on the scale and that is what weighing does to me.

Yesterday was a raisin bran muffin for breakfast, then Bible Study Fellowship, lunch was a plate of sliced avocado, sweet potato with butter/stevia/cinnamon, and two hard boiled eggs. I had a food bar and half an apple before going to body sculpt, and then had almonds and some of my sugar free cappuccino in the evening. Today won't be too much different other than a salad for lunch rather than the avocado plate. I have step aerobics this morning and am on call from 3 - 11. I have to run the route tomorrow. I will be quilting today. I am doing pretty well at working on my pigs (projects in grocery sacks).

How can I say it works if I merely admire it rather than live by it?

Talk is cheap isn't it? We have a few bloggers who are called train wrecks and with good reason. They just talk. That's it. It's interesting that so many others believe these people are really serious. I don't even read them because they are only posturing. I get enough information second hand. I don't watch soap operas either.

There are false starts and setbacks for everyone. If it was easy we would all be slim and trim. It's not easy. It takes determination and the ability to overcome ourselves.

I went to step aerobics yesterday and will be going to body sculpt tonight. Wednesday and Friday mornings will be step aerobics again and Thursday night will be another body sculpt class. I am on call from 7 in the morning until 11 at night on Saturdays and Sundays for a while. I need to get in gear and at least do something on one of those days here at home.

Yesterday was a raisin bran muffin (like you didn't already know that), a protein food bar, an apple, a huge salad and two squares of dark chocolate. I have been drinking 96 oz. of water a day.

My Day

I went to Terre Haute today to meet my first college roommate for a movie (Les Miserables) and a meal. She was running a little late and service calls for ATM's were coming in so we skipped the movie and went to a steak house to eat.

They took us to a booth but it was too tight of a fit for her so we moved to a table. She has bad knees and is obese. I told her that every 1 lb. loss would take 4 lbs. of pressure off her knees. She was impressed but evidently not impressed enough. I usually help her into her wheel chair and get her in to wherever it is we are going but she thought she could make it with a cane today. You should see her try to stand. It is extremely painful and after she finally gets up she has to stand for a bit before she can go anywhere. She is waiting for Medicare for her knee replacement surgery.

I had Tilapia, steamed vegetables, and just a bit of bread with butter. It was a pumpernickel which has a low glycemic index. She ordered quesedillas (sp?)  for the appetizer and I had two. She had two and took the other 4 home with the rest of the bread. I ordered cheesecake for dessert. It was a very small sliver and we shared it. The raspberry sauce was magnificent. We each had about three small bites. My stomach was growling for lunch and it is almost 6 p.m. now and I haven't growled yet. If I growl, I will have an apple with some cashew butter on it. I had my raisin bran muffin for breakfast when I growled and a protein bar when I growled again about 9 a.m. I did have some sugar today but that happens rarely and usually only when out and then only a little. It doesn't trigger me anymore.

American Medical Response, the largest ambulance company in the United States, introduced bariatric ambulances in 2001. Their cots can accommodate up to 1,600 pounds, compared with older models that hold only up to 800 pounds.

CT Scanners

Imaging companies such as Siemens and General Electric are building new equipment to accommodate Americans' growing girths. Siemens's CT scanner went from a 60-centimeter (23.6 inches) diameter in 1997 to an 80-centimeter (31.5 inches)  diameter in 2011, a 25 percent increase.

The Thing about Inspiration

This got me thinking about myself. 

I have so many quilt books and patterns and so much fabric. Will this get more quilts made?

I have daily inspirational readings, books on self-improvement, videos, things to listen to in the car - like the mere purchasing of these things will change me. 

I go on shop hops and get what I need to make a quilt top. Some of them are still in the sacks. I have a quilt kit from the first shop hop I ever went on. I am so pathetic.

How about you? Do you invest in all the stuff (exercise equipment, videos, memberships, workout clothes) and still have farther to go than you should?

It really is time to get out of the bleachers, isn't it?

Lizzie Velasquez has a rare condition. She cannot gain weight.

Those of us who have struggled with obesity at first might think this would be a blessing.

We can do something about our weight. Lizzie cannot.

She was voted the world's ugliest woman. Her YouTube video brought cruel comments that she should kill herself.

No more whining. We can do something about it. We should do something about. Will we? Lizzie would love to be able to control her weight and cannot. Some bloggers out there could control their weight and do not.

Truth or Lie?

The truth does hurt sometimes doesn't it? We say we want the truth but can get very defensive in the face of it. The way the truth is said is important I think. Profanity, calling people names, and throwing insults makes us look bad not the person being told the truth.

Most people really are more comfortable with lies about their weight, their eating, their exercising and ask questions at the end of their blog posts that lead people to comment with a lie. Someone blogged the other day - I think it was Jenn - about how these people have hundreds and thousands of followers. I have wondered about that myself. The serious bloggers have fewer followers because they tell the truth about themselves and tell the truth to others. Even if the comment or post has some "salty" language if the gist of the comment or post is really true that will come through. People who appreciate a person who walks the talk will accept that person's personality.

Let's just not lie to ourselves.

Of Pounds and Politics

I have another blog now.  It's here.

I am a conservative and a Christian. I have many liberal friends who are great people. We just disagree in the area of politics. I have family members who are Democrat. I still love them as well. I have a son who is an atheist and a husband and another son who are indifferent. None of this means the relationship must be sacrificed due to difference of opinion.

I have comment moderation turned on at my new blog because I know there are people who cannot have a civil conversation when there is a difference of opinion. Too bad. I will be the only one reading those comments.

The old and familiar is more comforting to contemplate than the new and untried.

I read the above in my OA For Today readings. I think the word "awesome" is completely overused these days but there is a certain awe considering the empty year before us all. There is nothing to recognize about 2013 yet because there is no "echo" yet; 2013 is yet to be warmed by the fires of what we do, what we accomplish, what we become.

Too often we have gone back to the old and familiar because it was old and familiar. It's the echoes of our own voices calling us back. What voices will pull us forward and through 2013? It is the voice of our own hope. Will the voice of fear drive us back or keep us from the prize?

What voice are we going to listen to this year?

The voice of fear will convince us that we cannot do this. What do we do? We exercise, eat right, and get the water in anyway. We must ignore the voices of insecurity in our heads - those voices that remind us of how many times we have failed in the past - the old and familiar.

Remember being afraid to go into a dark room because of the unknown things that might be waiting? Why did we assume that there was something to be frightened of in the darkness? There was something in that room we wanted so we found the light switch and after flipping on the light we saw there was nothing to be afraid of all along.

That dark room is 2013. There's nothing to be afraid of. The light switch is in our brains and our hearts. This year will be an echo in 2014. What do we want it to say?

Two In A Row

I had my usual Raisin Bran muffin for breakfast. I ran the route today so in the car I had a protein food bar, an apple, and 1/2 cup of my trail mix. I had chicken vegetable soup when I got home and a pear. I will probably have a handful of almonds before going to bed.  I got in the 8 glasses of water and had some green tea in addition to my decaf coffee.

I found out I don't have to run the route tomorrow like I thought so I can go to my Quilt Club meeting. I will be going to Body Sculpt tomorrow evening.

Decent Start

Yesterday I had my raisin bran muffin for breakfast and a protein bar mid morning. I took my Mom out for lunch and had a big chef salad. Supper was a handful of almonds, an apple, and 2 squares of dark chocolate. I get the 90% cacao kind. I like it. I was hungry and had a small banana before bed.

I drank 8 glasses of water. Didn't exercise. I will get back to my body sculpt class Thursday evening and step aerobics on Friday morning. I should be nice and sore.

Friday evening is the showing for my Mom's sister and the funeral is at 11 a.m. on Saturday. I also have to run the route tomorrow but not on Friday.

 This party nearly has a permanent majority. The Democrats know that if you give people things they will vote for you. The Republican Party is in trouble because they represent cutting back, restructuring, and making difficult decisions. For this they are demonized. This fiscal cliff proposal contained $41 of spending for every $1 in cuts. Taxing the rich is nothing more than redistributing wealth; it has nothing to do with the deficit or the debt. Obama even proposed in one of his offers to have no debt ceiling. Why have a debt ceiling if we keep raising it? Most of the wealth in this nation is in the middle class and this government will need that next. After the permanent majority is sealed; they won't need to worry about anything getting in the way of their agenda.

The other evening on my twitter, a person asked me why I didn't like the Obama's? Specifically I was asked: "I have to ask, why do you hate the Obama's? It seems personal, not policy related. You even dissed (disrespect) their Christmas family picture."

The truth is I do not like the Obamas, what they represent, their ideology, and I certainly do not like his policies and legislation. I've made no secret of my contempt for the Obamas. As I responded to the person who asked me the aforementioned question, I don't like them because they are committed to the fundamental change of my/our country into what can only be regarded as a Communist state.

I don't hate them per definition, but I condemn them because they are the worst kind of racialists, they are elitist Lenninists with contempt for traditional America. They display disrespect for the sanctity of the office he holds, and for those who are willing to admit same, Michelle Obama's raw contempt for white America is conspicuous. 

I don't like them because they comport themselves as emperor and empress.

I expect, no I demand respect, for the Office of President and a love of our country and her citizenry from the leader entrusted with the governance of same. President and Mrs. Reagan displayed an unparalleled love for the country and her people.

The Reagan's made Americans feel good about themselves and about what we could accomplish. Obama's arrogance by appointing 32 leftist czars and constantly bypassing congress is impeachable. Eric Holder is probably the MOST incompetent and arrogant DOJ head to ever hold the job. Could you envision President Reagan instructing his Justice Department to act like jack-booted thugs?

Presidents are politicians and all politicians are known and pretty much expected to manipulate the truth, if not outright lie, but even using that low standard, the Obama's have taken lies, dishonesty, deceit, mendacity, subterfuge and obfuscation to new depths. They are verbally abusive to the citizenry, and they display an animus for civility.

I do not like them, because they both display bigotry overtly, as in the case of Harvard Professor Louis Gates, when he accused the Cambridge Police of acting stupidly, and her code speak pursuant to not being able to be proud of America. I view that statement and that mindset as an insult to those who died to provide a country where a Kenyan, his illegal alien relatives, and his alleged progeny, could come and not only live freely, but rise to the highest, most powerful, position in the world.

Michelle Obama is free to hate and disparage whites because Americans of every description paid with their blood to ensure her right to do same.
I have a saying, that "the only reason a person hides things, is because they have something to hide." No president in history has spent millions of dollars to keep his records and his past sealed.

And what the two of them have shared has been proved to be lies. He lied about when and how they met, he lied about his mother's death and problems with insurance, Michelle lied to a crowd pursuant to nearly $500,000 bank stocks they inherited from his family. He has lied about his father's military service, about the civil rights movement, ad nausea. He lied to the world about the Supreme Court in a State of the Union address. He berated and publicly insulted a sitting Congressman. He has surrounded himself with the most rabidly, radical, socialist academicians today.

He opposed rulings that protected women and children that even Planned Parenthood did not seek to support. He is openly hostile to business and aggressively hostile to Israel. His wife treats being the First Lady as her personal American Express Black Card (arguably the most prestigious credit card in the world). I condemn them because, as people are suffering, losing their homes, their jobs, their retirements, he and his family are arrogantly showing off their life of entitlement - as he goes about creating and fomenting class warfare.

I don't like them, and I neither apologize nor retreat from my public condemnation of them and of his policies. We should condemn them for the disrespect they show our people, for his willful and unconstitutional actions pursuant to obeying the Constitutional parameters he is bound by, and his willful disregard for Congressional authority.

Dislike for them has nothing to do with the color of their skin; it has everything to do with their behavior, attitudes, and policies. And I have open scorn for their constantly playing the race card.

It is my intention to do all within my ability to ensure their reign is one term. I could go on, but let me conclude with this. I condemn in the strongest possible terms the media for refusing to investigate them, as they did President Bush and President Clinton, and for refusing to label them for what they truly are. There is no scenario known to man, whereby a white president and his wife could ignore laws, flaunt their position, and lord over the people, as these two are permitted out of fear for their color.

As I wrote in a syndicated column titled, "Nero In The White House" - "Never in my life, inside or outside of politics, have I witnessed such dishonesty in a political leader. He is the most mendacious political figure I have ever witnessed. Even by the low standards of his presidential predecessors, his narcissistic, contumacious arrogance is unequaled. Using Obama as the bar, Nero would have to be elevated to sainthood...

Many in America wanted to be proud when the first person of color was elected president, but instead, they have been witness to a congenital liar, a woman who has been ashamed of America her entire life, failed policies, intimidation, and a commonality hitherto not witnessed in political leaders. He and his wife view their life at our expense as an entitlement - while America's people go homeless, hungry and unemployed."

Areas Needing Improvement

Deb has a pretty neat idea here. It is one that I need to do as well. I am not going to call these things resolutions but rather areas that need improvement as they are ongoing. It's not like a complete about face like calling them a resolution would seem to imply. She lists 13 things to accomplish in 2013. Why don't you make a list as well and tell us what your list includes?

Here are my 13 areas in need of improvement. They are in no particular order.

1.  I need to manage money better. I waste so much more than I should. I do give and save out of each paycheck but with the rest I will make a greater effort to be more careful. For instance, I bought three bottles of an herbal thyroid treatment because there was a better price for doing so. It didn't work; in fact, my heart beats hard and fast when I take it. Now I have three bottles of it to throw away rather than one. I love to buy food and I like to cook and since I don't know when to stop at pretty much everything I throw out way too much food.

2.  I will make a greater effort to exercise at home when I can't make it to a class. This is hard because we have a small house and it's hard to exercise here. I could do it though if I wanted to badly enough.

3.  One of Deb's goals was to stop purchasing cleaning products. My goal is to start using them. I hate housework. Hate it. Hate it. Hate it. Deb wants to use more household products to make her own cleaning products. I just need to start using any cleaning product. My goal is to clean house on Wednesdays.

4.  Reach my goal weight of 157 pounds.

5. Maintain my goal weight of 157 pounds.

6. Spend more time in prayer and Bible study.

7. I will stop missing Church/SS as often as I do.

8.  I will send a card or two each week to someone who is on our prayer list. I will also donate more of the things that the Church is in need of.

9.  I will spend some time outside each day weather permitting. Just because it is cold and winter doesn't mean I can't take a walk or clean off some flower bed or straighten the greenhouse a bit.

10. I will do a better job as secretary of Historic Centerville and treasurer of Promote Centerville.

11.  I will finish the many partially done quilts in my sewing room. This will take more than one year.

12. I will write a Kindle ebook of daily readings.

13. I will be a better wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend.

Are We Wiser?

Whether it is the beginning of a new year or a new month, week or day, it's tempting to make resolutions, to swear off, to promise to reform. Before OA I did not know that these pledges were misguided attempts to be in control, to try yet again to make a normal eater out of myself.

Let's not just change the date on our 2012 resolutions.  Whatever last year produced or did not produce we have that experience and should be wiser now; ready to use what we learned and not repeat mistakes.

This is a lifestyle change, not a temporary interruption of our normal way of doing things. We can't be successful by getting the weight off as fast as possible and then figure out how to keep it off once we get there. We will just be the same person in a smaller body and that person is someone we know all too well. We know how quickly that person will revert to old habits and rationalizations. Those of us who have backslid know how hard it is to get back on track after failing yet again to change like we needed to change. It is a cycle and it seems we have to hit bottom before we can start back up again. We know what we are doing yet we keep on doing it because there is something deep within that has to be completely spent before it is done with us.

This is my philosophy and it is one that has been years, tears, and fears in the making. It doesn't have to be a complete turnaround all at once; it's too much all at once. Something in us will want something that is familiar and will fight to get there.

Now to be redundant - STOP EATING SUGAR, STOP EATING SUGAR, STOP EATING SUGAR. Nothing, and I do mean nothing, good comes from eating sugar - nothing. If you will do that and start drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day, 10 would be even better, things will start to change for you.

People place a lot of emphasis on exercise and it is a good thing for sure but you can lose weight without a formal exercise program/schedule. I exercise because I enjoy it and the way it makes me feel. When I am exercising I am not sitting on my butt for that same hour. I am socializing too. As I age I want to be able to climb a flight of stairs and not be winded. I want to be able to open a jar. We all know the benefits of exercise but don't beat yourself up over it. Many start the new year thinking they must all of a sudden exercise 6 or 7 days a week for an hour or two. They burn themselves out or injure themselves. If you want to exercise and I hope you do, start with 3 days a week and then add an day after a month and then another day if you feel like it. Weights are an important thing - even better than aerobics - weights lifted at the right pace and for long enough will also have aerobic benefits. Weight lifting doesn't take much room and can be done at home. Find some YouTube videos to watch. Do it while watching the news or a movie. Correct form is critical for lifting weights. Make sure you hold your abs tight so as to support your back. Educate yourself on lifting weights correctly or you can hurt yourself. Lifting weights is better than the machines at the gym because of the counter-balancing that must be done during the lift. Machines don't make counter-balancing necessary and don't prepare muscles as well for everyday activities such as lifting, holding, and carrying.

After you get the refined sugar out of your system start cutting back on other carbs. I haven't had a slice of bread in I can't remember when. If I am out and have to buy something to eat I go to Arby's, get a plain roast beef sandwich, and either throw away the top bun or just eat the meat and throw away the entire bun. I don't ever eat potatoes unless they are sweet potatoes. I never eat pasta. I have very little dairy.  There is this Deluxe Nut Mix that convenience stores and truck stops carry that has no peanuts, just tree nuts, in it, and it is great. They are salted but otherwise excellent. I have those a lot when on my ATM service calls and routes. I always take an apple with me, a protein food bar, and some of my home made trail mix but I sometimes run out of things when I get more service calls while I am already on another call. I always take water or stop and buy it.

I weighed 178.5 this morning. I was pretty happy really. I am still in the same digit and am ready to finish this up at a rate of 5 lb. per month. I am only going to weigh once a month because weighing is still an emotional thing for me so why put myself through it? I have decided on 157 as my goal weight. That was what I weighed when I got married so it's a pretty good number, realistic, and low enough so that everybody will caution me about getting too skinny. :-)

I have salad made, chicken vegetable soup made, and have my protein bars on hand as well as my trail mix and some fruit. Nothing can get in the way but me.

Yesterday was challenging. My mother's sister died They took her off the respirator and she couldn't breath on her own. Out of the six girls, now there is Mom and one sister left so we don't want her to be alone for a while. She is 86 and is in good shape all things considered. She has always done some simple exercises on her own. She is the third oldest of the 6 girls and all the younger ones have gone before her and one older sister so exercising has served her well. She still drives and lives alone. The sister "Aunt Tootsie" whose name was Colletta was 82; the youngest of the girls died this summer. Nathan, the son that is in the Army, was in a wreck yesterday. No one was hurt but he thinks his truck is a total loss. Slick roads and someone slid into him. It was a 1999 Silverado he bought new. He has always taken care of it so it was still in good shape. We are the kind of people who don't get rid of a car until it has to be dragged to the recycling center. My Pontiac Bonneville had 318,000 miles on it when it croaked.

Basically Maslow said that the lower levels of needs must be satisfied before one can successfully move on to the higher levels of needs. Food, water, and shelter are basic needs. These needs can be satisfied without unrestricted satisfaction or a focus that is outside of normal. When we oversatisfy a need, it brings its own punishment that we could call idolatry, addiction, or compulsion perhaps.

For example, someone who is starving is not too concerned about getting an education because a basic need is not being filled. As I read the article it seems the bottom step has been expanded to include sex. I always liked Freud. His theories do make sense. He does seem to relate every problem or motivation we have to sex which could be argued I suppose. I look around and see people ruining their lives and the lives of the children they produce over promiscuity. Sex sells. TV commercials use the young and sexy to market products. Movies, sit coms, etc., treat sex like having a glass of water.
