I think it could be talking about the next 24 hours. It will be time for New Year's Resolutions before long. Mine is going to be about managing money and clutter. If you read an earlier post of mine, a therapist reported that people with eating/food/weight issues also have problems with money and clutter. I wonder why that is? Do you have any ideas about what the correlation would be? I have been thinking about it because I need to do a better job of managing money - I waste far too much money and am the queen of clutter. I am a terrible housekeeper. I can sit in the middle of the biggest mess you ever saw and read a book or quilt.

Ready, Set, Go

How many of us find ourselves in difficult circumstances right now? I think we must first consider how much of it is our own fault and how much of it is out of our control. Has the new worn off? This isn't fun anymore. I do know if the drive/motivation/whatever is lost, it sure is hard to regain traction. Our mindset has to change. We have to make our eating pattern the new normal.

I do think many things can become tiring. Apples and raw vegetables make us feel virtuous but they do get old. Why doesn't pizza get old? Have you ever had fat free cottage cheese (yuk!) I would rather have less of the real stuff than a whole container of that. Do we burn ourselves out on vegetables because we can pretty much have all we want? Should we learn to eat smaller amounts of the foods we really, really like? Is that possible? I have noticed that people will make their whole meal on pizza - that's all they have and they have lots of it. A pizza or two is ordered, perhaps bread sticks with the cheese sauce, and drinks. What's wrong with this picture? My husband and I back in the day would order a whole, large pizza - supreme, of course - and share it. It was hard to get my half down but I was a trooper. This scenario can be changed by making our own pizzas. I made a wonderful pizza that used spaghetti sauce on my home made crust, there was fresh spinach with olive oil drizzled over it, I decided to crumble up some bacon all over it (not heavily, just enough for that wonderful bacon flavor), and then there was feta cheese. At home, we can make a smaller pizza, have a salad, make some garlic bread - just enough for one piece each. I just learned that authentic Italian pizza is not loaded up like we do here in America.

Only making just enough so there won't be any leftovers is key. My cue to stop eating is "it's all gone". How about you?

What needs to change if you have lost your traction? I have had to just wait on it before. I didn't care for a time and I didn't care that I didn't care. There would be a gain. I would decide it was time to do something about it, get all excited about the new plans I had made, buy new workout clothes/shoes, start with guns blazing, only to repeat the cycle. How do we interrupt that cycle? We make a new normal. New habits are needed. We still take showers, do the laundry, get our hair cut because it is normal for us to do those things.  Behaviors like exercising, drinking 8 glasses of water, and waiting for true hunger can also be made a normal part of life.

I have been thinking about a challenge that would be behaviors only - no weigh-ins or food plans. This challenge would be a week at a time and build. Our first week would be drinking 8 glasses of water per day, then our second week would be drinking the water and exercising 3 - 5 times per week, then our third week would be the water, the exercising, and not eating after 6 p.m. for example. What do you think? After a while I would need suggestions or my fourth week would be to add waiting for the growl and then the challenge would be over. I am mulling this over. Would appreciate input and suggestions for behaviors we would be addressing. Please also suggest a name for the challenge. That one challenge had a way to post a link to our post where we reported on how we had done the previous week. She also had a list of the names of the people in the challenge and she had made their names a link to their blog. I think I could do that. I know you can insert a link and give it a name. Anyone want to join me in organizing and managing this challenge?

Trends

I've noticed something. When people start experiencing difficulty with their plans, they start tweaking things that don't have anything to do with successful weight loss. They weigh on Tuesday rather than Saturday for example. One person rationalized this change as allowing some time to atone for a weekend that wasn't on plan. Is that planning ahead to fail you think? They stop blogging or they start blogging again. They weigh every day or they decide to weigh once a month or weekly or something different. They start exercising or they change things up. They try eating clean; they try the paleo method; low carb might be fun; they eat while standing on their heads.

This seems to make people feel better about their lack of success. When I am not successful, I know why. How about you? Does it help to change the day of our weigh-in?

Now that Thanksgiving is over, we can start blogging about the Christmas events and challenges. It will be our New Year's Resolutions after that - the cycle will then begin again for many of us. At the beginning of this year what were you determined to do and this time it was for real? Many vow to be really hard on themselves. How many of us weigh less today than we did on January 1, 2011? I know many of you do weigh less and you will be the ones who comment (I hope). What made this the year of success? What advice do you have for those who are about to repeat a cycle that they don't want to repeat? What was different this year for you? I want to know.

It's Over

So - how did you do? I did OK. I had two Thanksgivings to prepare for and attend. My only goal was moderation - one plate and dessert which I did. I did not expect to lose any weight and I probably did not but I have decided not to weigh myself until I am weighed at the doctor's office when I get my blood pressure prescription renewed. That will probably be the first or second week of December. There is a good chance I will be in onederland at that time but I am not going to get all spastic about it. If it happens, it happens. I will let you know. I did get the water in both of my Thanksgivings and I also exercised on each Thanksgiving Day. My devotions were done each morning. I had a growl each morning and I saved it for the meal just having half a muffin today so I could take my pills.

There have been bloggers who did as I did - rolled with the punches while being moderate and not a martyr. I have read the blogs of people who are disappointed in what they did. We know what we are doing. Some of us chose success and some of us chose same ole same ole. It's no biggie. The sun will come up in the morning.

This time next year where will you be in your weight loss efforts? One year starts today, now. Go get a glass of water and get started. But wait, let's not overwhelm ourselves thinking of  a whole year. Where will we be in our weight loss efforts this time tomorrow evening? I can make wise choices for one day - how about you?

People Pleasers

The more I work with people with eating disorders, the more convinced I am that eating disorders are shame-based.  By shame-based, I mean rooted in a deep and pervasive sense of badness.  While it looks different in different people, the basic cry is, “I’m not good enough”. Children develop these shame-based beliefs in many different ways.  The following list exhibits different parenting behaviors that either inhibit or promote the development of a positive self-image in children:

Children can receive a shaming message, such as “I am bad” or “I am a nuisance” in both direct and indirect ways.  Perhaps a parent is not actively criticizing or berating the child, but he or she is simply not present.  When parents are absent, children often interpret this to mean that they are not worth being taken care.  Children who grow up in shame-based families often develop an astute ability to read others in order to calculate how to best please others and meet their needs.  Children who can accommodate others can avoid the feelings of disapproval and shame.  Their worth becomes dependent on how well they can make others happy or cause as little trouble as possible.   Instead of developing a sense of self, their whole world is organized around “who should I be to best please this person?”

These are often the children who receive praise for being “such a sweet little girl” or “such a good student”.  These are often the children for whom teachers send home raving reports of following directions so well and turning in every assignment.  These kids cause almost no trouble for the basketball coach or with the neighborhood kids.  In fact, they may need almost no discipline at all.  They just seem to naturally do well at everything and choose the right and responsible path in life.

These are also the kids who are at the greatest risk for developing self-destructive coping mechanisms.  Because they are so good at protecting others from distress, they turn it inwards on themselves instead.  This is where the body dysmorphia and the eating disorder comes in. The body becomes a mold for perfectionism.  It becomes a medium to achieve acceptance, achievement, and goodness.  Part of the work of recovery is creating space for the outward expression of these suppressed feelings.  One must develop a self-worth apart from pleasing others.

My last two posts have been on the underlying causes of why we do what we do in the area of food/eating. I think many use this as a crutch and spend a lot of time and energy trying to figure out "why". Some people know for sure what about their backgrounds is at the root of their suffering. I think I know and these last two posts have been spot on as far as my situation is concerned. I don't know about you. I have read some horrible parent/child relationships and think "no wonder that person struggles". I have also read of many overcomers who have gone through tough times but have come out on the other end victorious. Why does one person still binge and another doesn't? How can we want something so badly and then do things to keep it from happening? I think about this a lot. Jane over at "Keeping the Pounds Off" lost a bunch of weight and then gained it back in 11 months. Now she has it off again. Wow. I am on my third time getting the weight off. It is beyond me why I would work that hard to get the weight off and then gain it back regardless of the emotional things going on. It is what it is and we have to play the hand we are dealt. Sometimes I think I am not playing with a full deck, however :-) elevator doesn't go all the way to the top, lights are on but nobody's home, not the sharpest knife in the drawer, few fries short of a happy meal, few bricks shy of a load - just a little humor. Hope your Thanksgiving was all you hoped it would be and more.

Something to Share




As an intuitive eating coach, I tend to attract clients who are very much like me. On some degree or another, not only do they struggle with food but also with money and clutter. I've even had clients say to me "How did you know that?" thinking I had been secretly spying through the curtains or hacking their bank accounts.

The have shit flying out of their closets knocking them in the head. Debt up to their eyeballs. And, of course, a wealth of rules and limiting beliefs about food (and money, and clutter).

Along the way, the patterns I have noticed have been very telling. Not only about the women I can be most in service to but about myself. I've noticed a lot of sadness shortly followed by anger. I've noticed a lot of lack and scarcity with food, money and things. There is always fear around what others might think. People pleasing and just wanting to be liked. They have no idea how to set boundaries or even what healthy boundaries are.

And, so to work we go. We work through their feelings, their beliefs, and their wants. We unravel the web of tangled beliefs and feelings that drive their actions. And we dig and dig.

No matter what, we always end up in the same place.

A deep desire to feel loved, to feel worthy and valuable in the world.

It always comes to this.

Often times, it can be scary to look that deeply at why we do what we do. It seems much easier to keep pretending that it is about the food.

And so, we spend our lives filling the void. Over-eating. Over-spending or saving. Obsessively cleaning or hoarding away. Wearing uncomfortable shoes so our friends will think we are cool. Saying yes when what we really want is to say no. And eating some more.

But, here is the thing.

All of those things are a shitty substitute for the real thing.

The real love that lives within your own heart.

The real freedom that comes from trusting yourself, your intuition and your life experience.

The liberation of knowing you are enough. You are whole. You are worthy. You are valuable.

Just the way you are.

People ask me all the time: what's the secret to making peace with food?

My answer is that it starts by making peace with you.

My Own Challenge

I was disgusted with myself yesterday after getting home after going out to dinner at Olive Garden with a friend. I still eat too fast, take too big of a bite, and chew too fast. The maddening part is I even realize I am doing it at the time and continue.

The Challenge I was in fizzled and that's OK. I think a long Challenge is rather doomed. Two or three months is just too long for a Challenge in my opinion. I hope if you are in a Challenge you are doing well. What makes a good, successful Challenge? I think it's one we make ourselves.

Anyway - I decided on my own Challenge just for me. As I sat in bed last night thinking about what I had done it came to me - I will reward myself one week at a time. If I do the following four things within the week, I will go to this boutique that has the neatest clothes and buy myself one thing. I will also buy for myself some really good coffee. I have given up creamers because I was beginning not to like that filmy, blecky aftertaste that comes with creamers. If the coffee is black, the quality becomes more apparent. The store brand, cheap stuff isn't getting it. The water is also very important - none of the city water with chlorine. I personally like coffee best that has been perked on the stove in one of those old percolators. Grinding the beans also enhances the finished product. Good, filtered water is a must.

OK - feel free to comment or do your own list of things you must do to earn your reward. Here is my list:

64 oz. of water each day

exercise 3 - 5 times a week

devotions/prayer every day

wait for the growl before eating all week

No weight goals. The behaviors will get me there. They will also get me new stuff and good coffee.

Today is Day 1 and it is a success. I can think of all kinds of weekly rewards - new nail polish or lipstick. You could get a massage or some bubble bath, a candle, some neat socks - what's your pleasure? I think a weekly reward for achieving goals is a good idea. What do you think?

I cannot tell you how much this post spoke to me. I have always said I could very easily be an alcoholic. I can tell. Reading about transference now gives a name to this tendency I have. I do spend too much but do keep that pretty much in control. I have gone on what I would call a spending "binge".

Busted


I usually don't share recipes but this is a good way to make vegetables tasty.

Roasted Vegetables and Chickpeas

1 lb. carrots, peeled and cut into 2-inch pieces
l lb. sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
l large red onion, peeled, halved, and cut into 1 inch wedges
1 lb. red or russet potatoes, cut into cubes
6 cloves garlic, minced
1 - 16 oz. can chickpeas (garbanzos), rinsed and drained
3 Tbsp. vegetable or olive oil
1 tsp. dried rosemary, crushed
1 tsp. brown or granulated sugar
1/2 tsp. kosher salt
1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper

1. Move oven rack to center of oven. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Place all vegetables, garlic, and chickpeas in a large shallow roasting pan. In a small bowl combine oil, rosemary, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Drizzle over vegetables; toss well to coat.

2.  Roast, uncovered, about 45 min. or until vegetables are lightly browned and tender, stirring twice. Makes 8 servings.  223 cal., 4 g. fat, 301 mg. sodium, 42 g. carbs, 7 g. fiber, 6 gr. protein.

I imagine you could use all sweet potatoes and no russet to cut down on carbs. I also added celery. Do not substitute other beans for chickpeas as they get mushy. I had some of this with some cottage cheese for supper and a Fiber 1 yogurt for dessert.

It's Saturday and I am off to Jazzercise here in a bit. I missed this past week. I don't really have a good reason - just excuses. Let's see - I think I will blame it on the time change adjustment thingy.

Pay Attention

Here is a test:  For the next minute, DO NOT think about food. Ready, go.

OK - how did you do? Did you fight not to think about food? How many of us try not to think about eating, food, calories, how many glasses of water, if we will exercise, etc.? It just makes it worse.

Do any of us spend our day thinking about health? Do we act as though we already are at our goal weight? Do we talk about how wonderful those fruits and vegetables were we had at lunch like we would rave over that meal we had at Thanksgiving or Christmas? That meal was to die for. We roll our eyes and swoon as we describe the experience.

Do we ever listen to people when they talk about how hungry they are? They are starving to death. They are dying. They could eat a horse. A naturally slim person has to think a bit and then they say, "I could probably eat something." They are thinking about other things. Their attention is on other things; our world revolves around the next time we get to eat; if we can wait; what we are having. As soon as we are done with this meal, we begin thinking about the next one.

Let's pay attention to what we are paying attention to and see if we can pay attention to what is positive and healthy. Thoughts are things and they draw to themselves positive or negative, whatever is like them. It all depends on what we choose to think about and pay attention to. Are we looking forward to waking up tomorrow with the pleasant memory of today's success because we are filling our heads with the good things that will fill this evening? Are we looking forward to weighing because we know we have been doing what it takes? This is different from just doing something remember. Isn't that better than dreading tonight because a binge is imminent? Pay it no mind and it won't happen.

This is a good post about rather than just doing something, we must do what it takes. A good lesson here - how many times have we pouted and chucked the whole weight loss thing because we felt like we had done something so therefore would have a large weight loss? We didn't do what it takes; we only danced around and played a little bit of the game. It could take a year or two for some of us and that is with consistent effort but if that is what it takes, then we have to accept that fact.

Hope all of you are finding your way, resisting the idolatry of overeating/gluttony, and preparing yourselves for a greater service each day. We weren't put on this earth for ourselves. Science has yet to create a single human cell from scratch and will not by the way. Look around, the world is going crazy - families are in trouble, the economy could collapse at any moment, and people are using drugs, food, and alcohol to numb themselves. It isn't working.

I remember my Grandma telling me stories as I fell asleep when I stayed at her house. There was always a happy ending. My favorite was about an ugly little pony that nobody wanted. A little girl chose him for her own and through her love and care that pony became a beautiful horse.

That little girl saw the beauty in that little ugly pony.

If today is a typical day for the rest of our lives, how will our stories end? I like happy endings.

Mind Games

Rules of the Mind


Did you know that our mind operates under some very specific rules? 
Well it does. By understanding these mental rules,
you can better understand why people act and react the way they do in life.


Rule #1: Every thought or idea causes a physical reaction.

Your thoughts can affect all of the functions of your body. Worry triggers changes in the stomach that in time can lead to ulcers. ANGER thoughts stimulate your adrenal glands and increased adrenaline in the blood stream causes many body changes. ANXIETY and FEAR thoughts affect your pulse rate.

Ideas that have a strong emotional content almost always reach the subconscious mind, because it is the feeling mind. Once accepted, these ideas continue to produce the same body reaction over and over again. In order to eliminate or change chronic negative bodily reactions, we must reach the subconscious mind and change the idea responsible for the reaction. This can be done using hypnosis.

I don't know about the hypnosis thing. How can we find our own peace without going to someone who knows how to do mind things? This seems to be saying to me that this is a spiritual matter, something with the soul. There are many who have changed without hypnosis. I guess I am reluctant to turn that part of myself over to someone else for solving the problem. What is your take on hypnosis? Have you ever been hypnotized? Were there any results?


Rule #2: What the mind expects to happen tends to be realized.

The brain and nervous system respond only to mental images. It does not matter if the image is self-induced or from the external world. The mental image formed becomes the blueprint, and the subconscious mind uses every means at its disposal to carry out the plan. Worry is a form of programming a picture of what we don't want, but the subconscious mind acts to fulfill the pictures situation. "THE THINGS THAT I HAVE FEARED HAVE COME UPON ME.

Many persons suffer from chronic anxiety, which is simply a subconscious mental expectancy that something terrible will happen to them. On the other hand, we all know people who seem to have the "Magic Touch." What they have is NOT a positive mental attitude but a POSITIVE MENTAL EXPECTANCY! Another way of stating it is WE BECOME WHAT WE THINK ABOUT!

Our physical health is largely dependent upon our mental expectancy. Physicians recognize that if a patient expects to remain sick or even die, the expected condition tends to be realized. Here is where hypnosis can become the tool to remove despondence and negative attitudes and bring about a positive mental expectancy.

BTW KT - I left a comment that is not showing up - frustrating it is. We tend to "see" what the mind expects to see. There was a psychology experiment that I used to do with my high school class. We would blindfold a volunteer. Another student would strike a match which the blindfolded student could hear and smell. Another student would touch that person with an ice cube and they would swear they had been burned. I kept this article word for word because it is someone else's work but I really believe we don't have to be "reprogrammed" by someone else so that we can overcome. I know anorexics and bulimics "see" fat that is not there because of their mind's expectations. I hope Food Freak comments because she knows a lot about this.


I read once about a doctor who could tell which cancer patients were more likely to survive. The fighters, the ones who wouldn't give up, the optimists had a much greater chance of beating it. Those who gave up, decided death was imminent often lost their battle. Self-fulfilling prophecy. We don't like to be wrong so we set out to prove ourselves right. Couldn't that also apply to weight loss?


Rule #3: Imagination is more powerful than knowledge when dealing with your own mind or the mind of another.

This is an important rule to remember when using self-hypnosis. REASON IS EASILY OVERRULED BY IMAGINATION. This is why some persons blindly rush into some unreasonable act or situation. Violent crimes based on jealously are almost always caused by an overactive imagination. Any idea accompanied by a strong emotion such as anger, hatred, love, or our political or religious beliefs usually cannot be modified through the use of reason. In using hypnosis we can form images in the subconscious mind, which is the feeling level mind, and can remove, alter or amend old ideas.

Many rush into marriage and think their love is the love to beat all loves ever. Love can make women overlook the signs that the man they marry will become abusive. Men don't see the fact that that woman has already been married 3 or 4 times as a possible red flag. Have you ever tried to reason with someone else about a decision that person is about to make that you can tell is a bad idea? Politics and religion are two topics that can really get people going. Get rich quick schemes come to mind. Ever bought a sporty looking car without thinking it through or having it checked out because  you thought you would look so sexy in it and regretted your decision? 


Rule #4: Once an idea has been accepted by the subconscious mind, it remains until it is replaced by another idea.

The companion rule to this is THE LONGER AN IDEA REMAINS, THE MORE OPPOSITION THERE IS TO REPLACING IT WITH A NEW IDEA. Once an idea has been accepted, it tends to become a fixed habit of thinking. This is how habits are formed. First there is the thought and then the action. For example, some people believe that at critical times they must have a drink of whisky or a tranquilizer to steady their nerves so they can perform effectively. This is not correct, but the idea is there and it is a fixed habit of thought. There will always be opposition to replacing it with a correct idea. No matter how fixed the ideas may be or how long they have remained, they can be changed using hypnosis.

How many times have you and I thought that we can just have a little bit of food in the evening and then it becomes a full blown binge? The idea is there that food fixes things. This uneasiness we feel is going to be fixed by the No. 3 Combo at wherever. Supersized of course. Our fixed habits of thought will be corrected when we keep working at our new habits of thought. The people who are maintaining and keeping off weight that has been lost have not been hypnotized.


Rule #5: Each suggestion acted upon creates less opposition to successive suggestion.

A mental habit is easier to follow the longer it lasts unbroken. Once a habit is formed it becomes easier to follow and more difficult to break. In other words, once a suggestion has been accepted by your subconscious mind, it becomes easier for additional suggestions to be accepted and acted upon. This is why compounding suggestions while in hypnosis is very effective. Stage hypnotists have known this rule for a long time. 

The sooner we make new habits the better.


Rule #6: An emotionally induced symptom tends to cause organic change if persisted in long enough.

It has been acknowledged by many reputable medical men and women that more than seventy percent of human ailments are functional rather than organic. This means the function, of an organ or other part of the body has been disrupted by a reaction of the nervous system to negative ideas held in the subconscious mind. We are a mind in a body and the two cannot be separated. Therefore, if you continue to fear ill health, constantly talk about your "nervous stomach" or "tension headaches," in time organic changes must occur.

Let's talk to ourselves and to others about ourselves in different ways. Our bodies respond to positive and negative talk and expectations. We compound our difficulties when we "claim" them for ourselves. If we fear being fat forever, will there be an organic change in our bodies? Does this contribute to a binge? Does fear of failure "cause" the very thing we fear? I've read people berating themselves on their blogs and then others seem very positive about what's happening even if they have fallen short somewhat.


Rule #7: When dealing with the subconscious mind and its functions, the greater the conscious effort, the less the subconscious response.

This proves why "will power" does not really exist! If you had insomnia, you've learned the law of reverse effect. This means, the harder you try the more difficult it becomes. The harder you try to go to sleep, the more wide awake you become.

The rule is, "When dealing with the subconscious mind, TAKE IT EASY." As your faith in your subconscious mind increases, you learn to "let it happen" rather than trying to "force it to happen."  Some people want hypnosis so badly that they try to help it happen. This keeps the conscious mind active and any workable depth of trance becomes impossible.

Is prayer and meditation a form of self-hypnosis? I think it is not. We don't need anybody else to bring about our healing. "Physician, heal thyself" is a quote I don't know the author of but it's apt right here. Prayer is talking to God - a power greater than ourselves, the Creator. Of course, I know there will be opposing views on this. Many practice meditation and yoga. This is my opinion and my belief. Meditation can be done in a Christian manner as well I believe.
