This will make you think about what we are becoming due to some of the amazing advancements in technology. How many of us are guilty of impatience because we want it now?


I had to look up "paraprosdokian". Here is the definition:
"Figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected; frequently used in a humorous situation."
"Where there's a will, I want to be in it," is a type of paraprosdokian.

Ok, so now enjoy!

This is one of the exercises in Marianne Williamson's book.

This would be a good addition to your journal/scrapbook if you are doing one. Doing this exercise will help bring to the surface things that need to be dealt with. Each one of these is a brick in your wall. After you write as much as you can - coming back to it until you have exhausted the topic - you should feel better. Ponder each topic until you can be neutral about it, until you can accept it, and until you learn what you need to learn.

Everybody has a  brick wall. How badly do we want to take each brick and heave it? No one has to see this but you so reflect and perhaps only do one a day. I would like to know if you got anything from doing this. I am not good at sharing my emotions or talking about what's troubling me so this is very therapeutic for people like me. Don't be afraid that someone will find it and read it. Keep it locked up somewhere until it has served its purpose then you can do with it as you please. You can treat it like you would treat something that doesn't serve you anymore and burn it - a symbolic way of destroying your wall.

Here is a video of the progress of a woman who lost an amazing amount of weight. It is very inspiring.


Who did you talk to the most yesterday? Was it a family member? a friend? a co-worker? No, it was YOU.

Is your voice telling you that you cannot paint? or lose weight? or run a mile?

If someone tells you that you cannot do something do you think, "Well, I'll show you"? Or do you agree with them or get deflated. Chances are that the person who tells us we can't do something is  that person in the mirror.

I had an interesting email from a person upon whose blog I commented. She said it was only one of the two she had ever deleted since she began blogging. My tone was not suitable for her readers. She said she could not stay on an eating plan. She had several reasons why the weight just wasn't coming off. She has a Christian sub-heading and seems to be a very nice person. Since she is a Christian I did not write as I would to someone who is not a Christian or who I am not sure about.

I told her that "can't" usually means "won't" and mentioned that gluttony is a sin. Food has become an idol and according to Ephesians 5:5 idolaters will not enter Heaven. I told her of my aunt who quit smoking because she felt like it hurt her witness. Would the obesity of a Christian hurt that person's witness? Remember the witness to the lost who might look upon obesity not as a Christian would. I told her about how I think Christians will say things like "God looks upon the heart" or "God loves me anyway" or "God doesn't care how I look" as a way to excuse being disobedient in the area of food and eating. I include myself in all of this. I certainly have done all these things and am guilty of the sin of gluttony.

You know what? It didn't bother me. In the past if I perceived that I was being criticized or that something I did or said made someone angry or upset I would take all the blame and feel like I had done something wrong. I would dwell on it. I will think about it and wonder if I could have chosen different words but I won't change the message in what I said. One Sunday in Church our minister said that there are two reasons people do not come to Christ. One is because they have never met a Christian, and the other is because they have. I want to be the Christian who is the kind of witness that will make others want to do the same.

I have to get back to painting now.

This was from my sister's blog:   jensgyrations.blogspot.com   Aren't these things easy to say? They sound so lofty. I guess they are something to reach for. It's kind of like graduation speeches. It's "go out there and change the world". Also "you can be anything you want to be". Reality check.  We have often been the doubters, daydreamers, procrastinators, and have quit. Some of us fight depression and bipolar disorder. Many have such low self-esteem that accomplishing anything takes a great deal of effort. Doesn't it seem to make the rough spots more difficult when we were supposed to be flying like eagles now? We can believe in a better tomorrow. We can plan ahead. It's important to get our rest. We should have made our own decision by now. Procrastinating must be conquered. Wishing doesn't really get us anywhere. Some of us are just getting by and we are to save? Listening is good - how many times have we spouted off and then regretted it? We also need to confide in those we trust and talk about what's bothering us. Smiling is hard sometimes. We just don't feel like it. Commending others lifts them up. We know how criticism feels - constructive criticism would be better. Persistence is of paramount importance. I read the blog of someone who was relating how she has a couple good days and then a really bad one. That is an easy pattern to fall into.   I went to Jazzercise last night. It's pretty fun. Kind of like dancing which I always loved to do. This morning I will do Step Aerobics.    Anybody with some weight loss, eating, or exercise pet peeves?  It bugs me in an exercise class to be doing moves and not keeping time to the music.
Don't let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish something stand in the way of your doing it. The time will pass anyway; we might just as well put that passing time to the best possible use."

I used to try to motivate my students who hated school. I knew they did. I would tell them, "You have to be here anyway why not at least apply yourself here whether you do homework or not?" As it related to their future I would say, "You can put in 8 hours a day and earn minimum wage or you can put in 8 hours a day and make some real money - either way it's 8 hours of your day." This was to try and get them to set some goals and consider education beyond high school.

Aren't we the same concerning our weight loss goals at times? This next year will pass regardless. Next year at this time could we be in good physical condition? Could our daily habits have changed and goals could have been set and reached? Could we be stronger and stop making excuses for our unwillingness to stick with the program? 

Will one year from today find us proud of the year that has just passed or will it be another year in which we just couldn't get it together? Will we just be one year older or will we be at our goal or have made significant progress? 

There's this gal in my Church who is obsessed with dieting. She is slim but makes a point to do things like picking up a cookie in front of others and then putting it down and saying "Nope, I didn't do my walking today." She will steer the conversation toward eating and dieting whenever she can. She is the standard by which we all are judged. I'm going to deck her one of these days :-).

Food Hell

You have tried many ways to end your food hell, from various food programs to exercise to fasting to who-knows-what. Now I propose that you try something you may or may not have tried before. I suggest that you plant a mustard seed and let God’s strength grow within you. I suggest you accept this fact: that you cannot beat this problem otherwise. You cannot stop. You have no control over it. It is bigger than you are. If you could have done this by yourself, you would have done so by now.

Your freedom lies in accepting that which frightens you most: that you are powerless to stop this problem, to fight it or to fix it . . . your compulsion to eat excessively is stronger than you are . . . you are so tired of this war you have fought against yourself that part of you would rather die than go on.

It’s time to surrender the struggle.

And how does that feel to you? Does it feel like a relief, or does it make you nervous? “What? Surrender? As in, just give up?” you might say. “Are you crazy? How can I give up?! If I give up, I will become truly obese! I might even die! I’ll be out of control entirely!”

Yet aren’t you out of control now? Exactly what part of you would guide you to keep up the fight? This voice that seems to be speaking to you with such concern and wisdom—is that a power that has proven effective at solving the problem? And if in fact it hasn’t, then isn’t it time to fire it as your guide?

Your salvation in this area lies not in resisting the truth of your powerlessness before food, but in accepting it and even embracing it. For this leads you straight into the arms of God, however you think of Him or whatever you understand Him to be. You realize, once you accept that your problem is bigger than you are, that perhaps something else is bigger than it. And then the miracle unfolds.

You are now at one of the most important crossroads of your life, as a problem you have dealt with for a long time has reached a climax. Perhaps you feel cornered now, as though you’ve tried everything and all your efforts are spent. Having depended on your own strength to heal yourself, you have ended up smack-dab back in the center of the wound. You feel checkmated by yourself and beaten by your own ego. All your efforts have been for nothing when confronted by the demonic power of your compulsion to eat excessively.
Yet the very situation that has wounded you can now become that which heals you, if you allow it to take you deep into the mystery of the soul’s dependence on the Divine. Do not forget that while your wound is more powerful than your conscious mind, God is more powerful than your wound.

I cannot, but God can! I cannot, but God can! becomes your mantra. And in realizing that the power of your mortal self is small when compared to the power of God, you will no longer need to “puff yourself up” in an effort to make yourself “big enough” to handle your problems. In fact, you will discover the power of true humility, deferring to a power that is greater than your own. The Divine is big enough to handle your problems—so you need not be.

It is when you allow God to be bigger that you will allow yourself to become physically smaller. You will begin to give up your burdens when you remember there is someone to give them to.

I have recommended this book before. I am recommending it again. As you read the above excerpt, it may have sounded like the Alcoholics Anonymous or Overeaters Anonymous steps. Those two programs have saved many addicts. These people had to get to the point where they could no longer deny they were powerless and needed a higher power to beat food hell.

In yesterday's post I commented on the obese people at my great niece's birthday party. I was thinking over my own attitude there again and remembered how I watched them fill their plates and took note of how they ate. What do I care? I don't like people evaluating what, how much, or the way I eat. They didn't know I was taking note however so it's OK. I ate a hamburger and a hot dog without a bun for either as I am watching the carbs. My sister-in-law said something about that and I told her I was watching carbs. I wasn't offended, didn't say it wasn't her business, or I'll eat my food the way I want and you do the same.  She just noticed.

I noticed what big amounts of things like macaroni and cheese one served herself. I also noticed what big bites they took. I took baked beans for a side dish. There were two potato type side dishes and one macaroni & cheese. The drinks were liter bottles of pop to drink - only one was diet. One person did bring a relish tray with veggies. There was a cheese ball. There were many cupcakes (I didn't have one). Lots of chips. White buns rather than whole grain. I guess that was pretty typical for a cookout/birthday party.

I guess I was watching because I have become more aware of these things. I have also read many times about small bites and chewing thoroughly - also small portions.

Are any of you more aware of what and how others eat? What are you noticing and how are you internalizing the information you are gathering?

Finally - I got my picture up. My next picture will be when I reach Onederland.

I weighed 217.5 this morning. That's .5lb  since Thursday. I think I will update my ticker on Thursdays. I will be perfectly happy with 1 pound a week. More will be great but I am going to be the tortoise rather than the hare this time through. It's the changes I make that I am going to focus on - the water, exercising, waiting for hunger, stopping when comfortably full - you know the drill.

Eat That Frog


I consider procrastination to be one of my greatest faults. Why don't I just go ahead and do that thing I am dreading and get it over with so it's not hanging over my head? I need to eat the frog and then my day is bound to get better. How about you?

Well, it's Easter. No special plans. I will go to Church alone. It is the last Sunday of the month so I and another lady will be taking the 3-4 grade Sunday School class to the nursing home. My Church has three services. We will go to the nursing home during the second service and then I will stay for third service.

I have a camera now and as soon as I get this done I am going to see if I can get my picture up. My niece took a full body shot at the birthday party we went to for a great niece. The one for whom I made the American Girl doll dresses. There is red glitter everywhere from the glitter in the netting for the tutu. Glad that's over. Her younger sister is 5 months old. That's a cute age. She had a stuffed rabbit and was just talking to it and smiling. There was a toddler there - Kyra. My nephew's daughter. He is separated from the mother whom he never married. My nephew's mother, Kyra's grandmother, brought her.  I guess that's enough about that.

I noticed some morbidly obese people at the birthday party and another one coming out of the Village Pantry when my husband stopped to get cigarettes. Have you ever noticed how we mentally compare ourselves to those people? The belly that hangs like an apron. The butt that looks like a shelf.  One at the birthday party stood up and was walking out. She had on sweats and a very, very large t-shirt and the t-shirt was caught in the crack of her butt and she didn't even realize it as she walked out. Another was so winded when she walked in from the car she had to lean on the wall for a bit. She was pulling her oxygen tank and her husband had to fix her plate for her. She is younger than I am. She had to brush the crumbs off her chest because that caught it all. That's where she rested her plate.  I remember once I went to work out and there was the largest lady I had ever seen there. They asked her if it bothered her to walk and she told them it did. They were going to design her exercises in the pool so the water would help support her weight. My heart goes out to these people but who do I think I am? I weighed 218 pounds on Thursday. I am 5'7" tall. Do we tend to look around and smugly think "at least I'm not that big"? Have you ever caught yourself looking at an obese person and being condescending in your attitude toward them? I have prayed not to be judgmental - it's another fault along with procrastination. I have more.

I always wondered why alcoholism was called a disease. It seemed to me that alcoholism was something the person caused by drinking too much. I know there are some more susceptible than others but before alcoholism happens don't they have the ability to realize where they are heading? Is obesity the same? I know one of the arguments is that we have to eat something whereas we can leave alcohol completely alone. We can leave gambling completely alone. It seems to me that obesity results from an emotional problem rather than a food problem. It seems to me to be a condition rather than a disease. I worked with a man Monday and Tuesday that talked about a brother who died of an overdose and another brother who was an alcoholic and also a parent if I remember correctly. He knew he could be the same. I told him when my son went to gamble he took $200 - left all other cash and credit cards at home. This man said the worst thing a person could do was take credit cards to a casino. He knew he had that compulsive personality. I do too. I have gone on eating binges and shopping binges. I am reluctant to use "disease" because then I have no control; I can hide behind "disease".

What does this have to do with eating a frog?

God bless you and yours this Easter. God came to earth as Jesus Christ because He was the only One Who could reconcile us. Sacrifices had to be perfect. Lambs who were sacrificed were without blemish and Jesus was the perfect lamb. God cannot look upon sin. Jesus Christ became sin so that His blood would cover our sins and God would see them no more. We just have to accept the gift. It is not something we can earn by being a good person.

Blogging has been a God-send to many of us because if we don't want to put up pictures we don't have to. We can wait until we are ready for that. Our words are all people "see".

Got me a new camera - one where I can post pictures on the internet. A niece's birthday party is today so I am going to try it out and see if I can get the hang of it. It's a rainy day here in Indiana. I made two doll outfits for my niece's American Girl doll - what a pain. There's a quilt show coming up and I have to get a quilt done so I can enter it next. I am going to Jazzercise this morning. Tomorrow is Easter. Any of you have an Easter tradition that you are looking forward to? We had a cookout planned at my brother's house after Church but this rainy weather may change that. About the time I think we are going to get our garden tillered up it begins to rain again. Oh well.

Top 5% pay 53.25% of all income taxes (Down from 2000 figure: 56.47%). The top 10% pay 64.89% (Down from 2000 figure: 67.33%). The top 25% pay 82.9% (Down from 2000 figure: 84.01%). The top 50% pay 96.03% (Down from 2000 figure: 96.09%). The bottom 50%? They pay a paltry 3.97% of all income taxes. The top 1% is paying more than ten times the federal income taxes than the bottom 50%! 
When I hear "tax breaks for the rich" I throw up in my mouth a little.

The Choice is Yours

Think about this for a moment...one choice, just one, can change your life forever. Simply put, your life today is what your choices have made it, but with new choices, you can change directions this very moment. For me, that idea alone is highly motivational because it offers tremendous hope, regardless of circumstances, for a better tomorrow.
Your life-changing choice may be to switch careers, to leave an abusive relationship, to go back to school, to stop drinking, to adopt a child, to start a business, to manage your weight, to start a charity...to name a few. If you have the courage to do so, you could make any one of those choices, or others, today. And you would change your life.
Sometimes it's a different kind of choice. It can be to not quit, to not give up in the face of adversity. We've all been there.

Remember that wise English teacher I referred to a few posts ago? He also told me once that he thought every person, at one time or another, makes a choice whether to go really bad or not as a youth. Can you think of a time during your teens when you had the choice of going down the wrong path big time? I can. Those kinds of big choices can really change a life. That choice can make all the difference in the world - in our world. What was in the back of my mind or your mind that kept you or me from really messing up? Remember I told you about my dad a while back. That was in the back of my mind (certain death :-). My dad was not a religious man but he was very honest and moral. When mad, he could turn the air blue with his language. He was shooting at our cows once because they had gotten out for the third time and he absolutely lost it. Anyway - He worked hard all his life. Quitting school was not a discussable topic at our house - if we were 35 when we graduated from high school then so be it. Then there was Mom. I didn't want to hurt her feelings or make her cry. I've told you about my hero, my grandmother. What if she found out and was disappointed in me?

All of us do not have people in our lives that have been that influence for doing the right thing. In fact, many have had people in their lives that made it difficult to amount to anything and those people are part of the baggage lugged around. It really doesn't serve us to find out whose to blame or stew about all the "if only" things. It is what it is. We must let it go; we can't hide behind it or use it as an excuse. Let go of the log.

Did you notice my weight loss ticker? I am going to start going public with my weight loss progress as so many of you do. I weigh on Monday and Thursday. My next goal is pictures. I don't have the camera for this. My son has one but he is in Wisconsin for a year with his camera (Army). My sister has one so I might drop in on her. I'll figure out something.

I am also going to tell you about what I am reading. Right now I am reading Life Without Ed by Jenni Schaefer. This is about a girl who beat her eating disorder (Ed). Here is one of my underlinings -

This may seem strange, but I am not going to try to explain eating disorders in this book. When I first entered into recovery, I made the mistake of believing that I could "think" my eating disorder away.  I read every book on the subject. This book is about letting go, falling down and getting back up again, and realizing that you are not alone. The reality is that between five and ten million women in the United States currently suffer from eating disorders.

Jenni treated Ed like a person to be argued with and disobeyed. I recommend it and will be reviewing more of it every few days (depending on how much reading I do). 

Has there been someone in your life that helped to keep you on the right track or at least not doing too much damage to your future? Was there someone who has made it difficult to be at peace with food and eating? Jenni had a chair in her therapy sessions that represented Ed and she talked to Ed as if there was a person named Ed in that chair that represented her eating disorder. She had conversations with Ed and eventually threw him out of her life.

I am now old enough to look back on my life and regret many things. I wish I had continued piano lessons. I wish I had done a better job of teaching. I wish I had married inside the Church.  We adjust, compromise, settle.

What do you already regret? What regrets will you have in 20 years if things don't change? Don't  we already regret that we are still carrying around this extra weight that should have been gone years ago? What purpose is it serving that we are willing to continue to keep it?  What are we settling for when it is within our power to do something about it?

How many blogs have I read about people who are really only playing around. I read someone's blog who has been at it longer than I have and she was talking about the number of blogs she has followed for quite some time and the person kept starting over, making commitments, reporting the bad days and all the reasons for lack of success and then she commented that she was doing the same thing.  We quickly recognize our own shortcomings in the lives of others don't we? We can probably all identify with this; I know I can.

Let Go of the Log!!

Imagine yourself standing in the rain on the bank of a raging river. Suddenly, the water-swollen bank gives way. You fall in and find yourself being tossed around in the rapids. Your efforts to keep afloat are futile and you are drowning. By chance, along comes a huge log and you grab it and hold on tight. The log keeps your head above water and saves your life. Clinging to the log you are swept downstream and eventually come to a place where the water is calm. There, in the distance, you see the riverbank and attempt to swim to shore. You are unable to do so, however, because you are still clinging to the huge log with one arm as you stroke with the other. How ironic. The very thing that saved your life is now getting in the way of you getting where you want to go.

This is not unlike the position many people find themselves in when they first become aware of their disordered eating. They feel foolish at best, humiliated at worst, that they are unable to stop a behavior that is interfering with their desire to get where they want to go in life. In the face of their shame, they quickly forget the role their disordered eating played in their survival, how it helped them keep their heads above water through some very rough times by giving them a way to deal with their conflicts, feelings, and difficult situations. They immediately assume that there is something wrong with them.

There are people on the shore who see you struggle and yell, “Let go of the log!” But you are unable to do so because you have no confidence in your ability to make it to shore.

Perhaps simply letting go of the log may not be the best course of action to take. What would happen if you let go of the log, began to swim to shore, and got halfway there only to find you didn't have the strength to make it all the way? This means that you wouldn't be able to make it back to the log, either.

And so, very slowly and carefully, you let go of the log and practice floating. When you start to sink, you grab back on. Then you let go of the log and practice treading water, and when you get tired, hold on once again. After awhile, you practice swimming around the log once, twice, ten times, a hundred times, until you gain the strength and confidence you need to swim to shore. Only then do you completely let go of the log.

Recovery begins with the understanding that the disordered eating behavior served you when your goal was survival. This understanding is then followed by the development of new skills that will enable you not to simply survive, but to get what you want out of life, to thrive.

I am reading this book. I recommend it highly. If you have read my blog for very long you can tell I like quotes and stories. Every chapter in this book has a story like the one above and then she relates it to disordered eating. It is the best book I have read in quite some time and I hope you get it and read it.

It has helped me to know that many are having the same struggles I do and understand all the emotions, victories, and stumbles that are a part of this "thing" we have with eating and food.

Past failures can do a job on our present efforts. We are sailing along just fine and then we do something that sets us back. Are we so used to failure that we go ahead and destroy our success so we can just get it over with? Have we limited ourselves to only so much success and happiness? Read "Your Miracle" in the March archives for some thoughts from Marianne Williamson's "A Course in Weight Loss".

The battlefield of the mind. Oh what a battlefield that is. It is full of land mines, IED's (improvised explosive devices), and varmints. Maneuvering through our battlefield is tricky. Only the strong survive. Only the ones who go through that battlefield will get to the victory that awaits on the other side. We may have some bumps and bruises but we want the victory badly enough to keep on even when a land mine slows us down a bit. Now that we are in it; it's too far to go back so we must go forward. We can't sit down and quit or the varmints will get us. There's nothing to do but gather our resources and use our minds to win the battle rather than let the enemy cause our minds to work against us. It's our mind; we'll put in there what we need to make each day a battle that will be won because we fought like a winner.

The last line should read "Is the person who KNOWS she can", not thinks she can, not hopes she can, who knows she can. If you didn't read Ayn Rand's quote in yesterday's post, please go back and do that now. Get on fire and run through that battlefield and don't look back. There was another quote I liked in the post before that that said this time next year you will wish you had started today. Do you know how they determine how many calories are in food? They burn it and measure the heat. You are setting the fat on your body on fire when you exercise. You will be setting it on fire when you eat less because your body will have to burn it for fuel. You will set it on fire when you build muscle and that muscle needs more calories to maintain itself than fat does. That's why we have to drink so much water - it's to put out the flames. (not really, I made that up). The water helps your kidneys flush out the "ash" that is left behind when fat is burned (that's true, I promise).

Have you ever seen a grease fire on the stove or when you grill out? That stuff is flammable. Burn baby burn.

Wow. I have blogged before about Ayn Rand.  Read "Full Steam Ahead" in the March archives. 

I have read this quote so many times. It's the most inspiring thing I have read in a long time. Are we just smoking or are we on fire? She tells us that the world we want is ours - we can have it. Make a copy of this for your journal/scrapbook. Make a copy on a 3 x 5 card and keep it with you so that you can read it often. I am going to. Tape it on your bathroom mirror.

I have been wondering what herbs, supplements, and/or vitamins people are taking and why? I don't mean your prescriptions - that would be too personal.

I bought a book called "Food as Medicine" and it recommends herbs, supplements, and foods for whatever condition a person has. I have had a doctor watch my thyroid (go to my "Let's Laugh" post for a funny about this) but never prescribed anything because it was never quite bad enough to do anything about. This book recommended taking kelp because of its iodine content so I do. I also take a fish oil supplement - cholesterol runs in the family. I take CoQ10 for the heart. I take a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement for joints, a multi-vitamin, Vitamin C, and zinc. I was taking a couple other things but ran out and didn't replace. The zinc is for blood pressure.

Some of the rationale is that our food is so highly processed that vitamins/minerals are lost so we need to supplement. Have any of you gone to organic food?

I would also be interested to know if any of you have ever taken these diet pills that are on the market or that we see advertised. What was your experience? 

What are your feelings about this? Is this hard on the liver? Have any of you noticed that it did any good?

I am still every age that I have been. Because I was once a child, I am always a child. Because I was once a searching adolescent, given to moods and ecstasies, these are still part of me, and always will be… This does not mean that I ought to be trapped or enclosed in any of these ages…the delayed adolescent, the childish adult, but that they are in me to be drawn on; to forget is a form of suicide… Far too many people misunderstand what putting away childish things means, and think that forgetting what it is like to think and feel and touch and smell and taste and see and hear like a three-year-old or a thirteen-year-old or a twenty-three-year-old means being grownup. When I’m with these people I, like the kids, feel that if this is what it means to be a grown-up, then I don’t ever want to be one. Instead of which, if I can retain a child’s awareness and joy, and be fifty-one, then I will really learn what it means to be grownup.

I used to teach school. I would sometimes talk about what happens to that excitement that children have in school. I have a niece who when little was mad because school was out on Labor Day not too long after school had started. She loved school and wanted to go. There were kids in high school who had fun no matter where they were. They were in all the activities and sports - enjoyed it all. Then there were some who dreaded school and hated every minute of it. Staying in the moment and finding the good doesn't mean that every day is all sunshine and roses. It does mean that we deal with it and move on.

Who do you know who always seems happy, optimistic, and full of fun? The glass half full rather than half empty? They can always find something good to say. If someone is being run down or gossiped about, they try to find something positive to say. How many times have I regretted believing something negative about a person only to find out later that what was said was exaggerated or untrue?

As the above says, our past is still with us. Those of us who have had difficult childhoods or who have made mistakes that we regret carry that too but are we now "stuck" or using it to explain present behavior? It's not so easy to shake off emotional baggage is it?  Those things can cripple our attempts at relationships that we would like to work. They can haunt us. What can be done?

We probably all know someone who has turned to drugs or alcohol. Those things will just add another problem - like turning to food. As a Christian, I am going tell you to turn to Jesus Christ; he will carry your burden. "Come unto me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest". Matthew 11:28. Email me with any concerns you have or any discussion you need at myrabaldwin@netzero.net - I know I have to walk a fine line here. I don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable but that's part of the recovery process, isn't it? We WANT to find a way - that's what we are looking for. I know I can be playing tennis against a blanket but maybe someone reading this is ready for the message. I've said it and we will leave it at that. Read Sarah's post from yesterday at  www.theweatheredword.blogspot.com - she has spent days at the hospital with her son and only child, Cole, who is very ill with leukemia.

I have found the blogs of many people who seem to really want to dig into the reasons and causes of this emotional struggle we have with food. There are blogs from people who show their daily food intake and report their exercising and talk about what life is for them. There are blogs from people who have a lot of turmoil in their lives. There are blogs from people who have had surgery. Some seem to be serious and some are still on the roller coaster. Their blog is part of their therapy. It's all good. I have really connected with some who follow my blog and with those whose blogs I follow. I am sure all of you have done the same. I am going to have to limit myself on blogging - any of you find you are having trouble not checking every hour or so?

There are groups to join for support as well. Weight Watchers, Overeaters Anonymous, TOPS (take off pounds sensibly), Weigh Down Workshop has online classes - those are the ones I know about, I am sure there are probably more. It can be a lonely trip if we don't have support from others.

Feel Like Giving Up?

Throwing in the towel, raising the white flag, tapping out. What does it take for us to admit defeat? How stubborn are we when it comes to getting what we want?

When we start out we are all fired up. This time it's for real. Get outta' my way, I'm comin' through. How long does it last? Maybe two weeks? What happened? You mean we didn't lose 20 pounds in two weeks? But I'm hungry. Everybody but me gets to eat a whole pizza. This little girl wants McDonald's.

What topic will you debate with passion? There are the old standards of abortion, capital punishment, gun control, stem cell research, euthanasia, same sex marriage - does just reading this list get your hackles up anywhere? Of course.What if we could get that passionate about being healthy?

How about this list? Exercise, planning, drinking water, calorie counting, weighing in. Do I hear the night sounds of crickets? Yes, I do.

There is negative reinforcement and there is positive reinforcement.

In a perfect world, we hear something once, record it in our brain, and never need to hear it again. Well, I don't know where you're living, but my world is far from perfect. I occasionally have doubts, fears, and disappointments in my life. During those times I need "shots of inspiration" to reinforce, to encourage, and to motivate.
What are some ways to reinforce what you believe, or to help you stay positive? Again, it's a very personal thing, but for me good books, "feel good" movies, music, prayer, exercise, and spending quality time with a positive friend can all make a difference. One of the keys, however, is not to wait until you get "down" to act. You need to make the time to reinforce on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Understanding the need is a first step. A proactive plan, however, is necessary to make reinforcement happen.

Positive reinforcement is more pleasant of course. My father used negative reinforcement quite effectively for correcting behavior. I will have to say it was effective. He didn't have to discipline us much but we knew he would and a couple of his behavior modification sessions were quite convincing.
Reinforcement is either a reward or a punishment to cause some behavior to continue or stop. Let's look at weighing ourselves. We want some positive reinforcement through a loss. Of course we weigh in the morning stark naked after going to the bathroom. We shave our eyebrows and take off our nail polish. At Weight Watchers or somewhere else like the doctor's we go to the bathroom, wear shoes that can be taken off, no jewelry or belts. I heard of a woman taking out her dentures. We wear the same outfit every time. Bad news can be negative reinforcement; we want that to stop so we know we had better clean up our act or it will happen again (young lady). Good news can mean that this past week of sticking to the plan will continue. Any of you have one of those kids that you could beat half to death and they still continue the bad behavior? Were any of you that child? Were you the risk taker in school who got into trouble all the time? For some people, it's worth it to break the rules because of the fun factor. However, being overweight has no fun factor. If we were rebellious and had the "you can't tell me what to do" attitude would that be a reason for rebelling against the rules we have to follow to lose weight?

If you are journaling or scrapbooking, why not get some of those colored stars and each day where you did everything right you would get a gold star. If it was "one of those days" perhaps a skull/crossbones or some other means of indicating a bad day could be used. How about a severed finger?

If you will go to http://debwillbethin.blogspot.com and read yesterday's post she has her method of reinforcement - stringing beads!!  It's a really cute idea.

Anyway - what positive reinforcement can you give yourself for having a plan and sticking to it and therefore reaching your goals? I have seen some bloggers with a list of rewards for every 10 or 25 or whatever pounds lost. The rewards got more substantial as the goal weight neared.

Weight Loss Myths/Facts

We also think that if, for example, one hour of aerobics burns 350 calories we can consume that many calories and come out even. Not so, we would have been burning calories anyway during that hour so the net burn would be the difference. I was kind of bummed to learn that but it does make sense. Exercise is great for endurance, raising our resting metabolic rate through muscle building, and blood sugar control among other things but we can't rely on it as much as we would like to for weight loss.

Also, calories are not created equal. Calories from proteins and fats are metabolized more slowly than calories from carbs. The body's preference is to burn carbs first. Only after the carbs are used will the body turn to proteins and fats. If the diet is low in carbs, the body will get to stored fat more quickly to burn for energy. Keeping insulin levels low will also help and this is done through restricting carbs. The body's signal to store fat is a high level of insulin - the hormone that is released from the pancreas to digest sugars. When we overeat, we overproduce insulin.

There is the South Beach diet which distinguishes between good carbs and bad carbs. The Zone Diet balances the amount of carbs, proteins, and fats. There is plain old calorie counting. Weight Watchers balances things out. Some people respond best to structure and some like a little more freedom.

It is important to lose weight in the manner you will continue to eat even when the weight is gone just adding back some calories each week until you find the point at which you will maintain. I have read the blogs of people who were concerned about weight maintenance. It is certainly a valid concern. The numbers of people who regain what they lost and then some is pretty amazing. We have all done it. Diabetics have to check their blood sugar always, those with high blood pressure will have to keep checking their blood pressure, and we will have to weigh ourselves and, if we need to do something like take insulin, watch salt/caffeine, or watch the diet a little more closely then we will catch it before it becomes a problem again. These three conditions, diabetes, high blood pressure, and weight maintenance all benefit from exercise. They all benefit from eating wisely. They are also interconnected to a great extent.

Jayme also has some wonderful recipes there I am going to try. Eating healthy doesn't have to be boring.

Getting back to the Paleo Diet, it is important to note that one of the big differences between it and some other low-carb diets, is that it forbids all grains. To be fair there are other low-carb diets that also forbid grains, but it was La Rue’s observation that gave me pause. By her elimination of all wheat (gluten) products, she physically felt so much better, that she encouraged her 70 year-old mother to try it, who also benefited by improving health, and equally as important her daughter’s mysterious rashes went away.

Over the years in my medical practice, I have observed a number of things regarding wheat products. Although gluten enteropathy (Celiac Disease) is not all that common, many, many people are still wheat sensitive without actually having Celiac Disease. What that means is that although on biopsy they might not have the pathological findings of the disease they still exhibit many negative symptoms, such as bloating, intermittent diarrhea, heartburn, skin rashes etc. Because dosage (how much wheat you ingest on any given day) varies, many of the symptoms are intermittent, which makes it difficult to make the connection.

Because we as human beings do respond dramatically to positive reinforcement, I’d like to make the following suggestion. Many of you who know in their heart of hearts that you could never live without, bread, and all other baked goods forever (except on perhaps rare occasions) and therefore wisely avoid low-carb diets as a means to solving your weight problems might want to do a two week experiment, especially if you are plagued with any of the GI problems mentioned above. Without going on a diet, just try to eliminate all wheat products, and see how you feel.

Why do I suggest this? Because if you derive the positive feedback of feeling physically wonderful without any GI symptoms or skin conditions, etc, then you might truly be able to benefit from the Paleo Diet. Although,
under normal circumstances, you could not conceive of sticking to a diet that forbade almost all grain goods, if every time you ate some, you felt physically uncomfortable, you might find that sticking to the diet will not
be nearly as difficult as you first thought!

Are We Good Readers?

Who me? You can't be serious? Moi'? 


The phrase the writing on the wall has come to signify a portent of doom—or the end of an organization or activity. To attribute to someone the ability to "read the writing on the wall" has come to signify the ability to foresee (not necessarily supernaturally) an inevitable decline and end. (From Wikipedia).

OK - this would be a good journal activity.

What's on your wall? What is in decline and about to end? It could be something positive like an end to binging. Would the wall say that binging episodes are less frequent and end more quickly? It could also be something we need to put the brakes on - like not planning, skipping the exercise, forgetting about the water. My blood pressure is too high - I am taking medication for it. I weigh too much. What would the writing on my wall possibly contain?  I get regular exercise and drink water - does that cancel out the high blood pressure and the obesity? I wish. Maybe in time but I can tell you I can out-eat any amount of exercise. Do you smoke? Do you drink too much? 

I was standing in the hall between classes with one of our English teachers. We were talking about unhealthy habits like smoking. He said he thought these people had the mentality that "it won't be today".  The cancer symptoms won't show up today, the heart attack won't be today, the stroke won't be today. This helps these people feel better about continuing something they know should stop - the writing is on the wall. Our weight can contribute to so many health issues - do we, too, think "it won't be today"?  This English teacher was a very wise man. He told me his testimony. He had a prosthetic leg from above the right knee. He was in the Korean War and said when he looked down after being hit, that leg was going in the opposite direction of what it should have. He was in the hospital near death and his Church was having a prayer vigil - someone was praying for him 24 hours a day. He told me he remembered the white light and Jesus was there to take him over. He asked if he could stay and raise his kids (he had 7). He lived.

Why not get a whiteboard (or piece of paper) and draw a line down the middle. On the left side write the things that are doomed and ending that should be doomed and ending - On the right side write the things that you should be taking steps to see that they end ASAP. You have the power to make this wall say anything you want it to say. You also have the strength to make it happen. Me too.

Making Motivation Last

Zig Ziglar, has a way with words. He said,"When I speak, people will occasionally say...'Zig, I loved your talk, but for me, motivation doesn't last!' I always tell them...bathing doesn't either. That's why I recommend it daily."

Why do we think things have to be fun? I do not consider losing weight or exercising fun. I am not particularly fired up when it's time to clean the toilets or wash windows either. Going to the dentist or shopping for new tires do not bring squeals of joy. I don't turn cartwheels and skip into the hospital for a mammogram. I remember a parent-teacher conference for one of my students who was a little turd. The student, his parents, his teachers, and our principal were in the conference room. His father said to us that we should make school  fun. OK - get right on that. I told him that I was sure teachers included some fun things when appropriate but some things just had to be learned; some things just had to be done.

I made good grades in school. The reason I studied was because I wanted good grades not because I loved studying.  The end justified the means in this case. That was what I had to do to get good grades. Same for weight loss. We want to weigh whatever our healthy weight is for us. We exercise and eat in such a way as to achieve that weight not because we love exercising and eating less but because we want that number to show up on the scale. Our means will get us to our ends - our ends will reflect what our means were. What end will the means you are using today achieve in the end? I'm confusing myself - - -

What Was I Thinking?

Have you seen the commercials where someone gets smacked in the head and says "I could have had a V-8!"?

I have wondered sometimes where I left my brain. Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

So, how do we control our thoughts? How we perceive situations determines how we react. Imagine yourself in a room sitting at a desk and someone brings in a snake. What would your reaction be? Picture someone in the light fixture - that would be me. I would probably also need a change of clothes. All that happened was I saw a snake - it hadn't done anything to me and if someone brought it in that person probably had a good hold on it. In fact, snakes have never done anything to me. I have learned to be afraid of them. Did you know that we are born with only two fears? Those two fears are the fear of  falling and the fear of loud noises. All other fears are learned. Our experiences have taught us to be afraid of the dark; I had a student who was afraid of clowns; I had a student who was afraid to get on an escalator.


This is about prayer and meditating. Can you sit still, relax, and shut out the world? I can tell you it is very difficult. Our minds race. We have thoughts coming and going. Emotions get in the way. There are many sites on meditating. Have you tried it? Were you able to do it? It is hard to even find a quiet place for me to be alone for any amount of time. I even have a difficult time staying focused when I pray. I must work on that. How about you? Let's begin right away. It's important that we do this each day. If we do, we will get better at it and gain more control over our thoughts and our emotions. I think in the morning is best before everything starts happening. It will get us off on the right foot.

Both abundance and lack of abundance exist simultaneously in our lives, as parallel realities. I like the visual of which garden we choose to tend. All of us have them both. If you are a visual person or have some talent why not draw up a picture of your garden of abundance and your garden of lack. Label each thing in both gardens with what is growing there. If you have no talent (like me) just do your best. It's not the artistic talent we're looking for, it's the experience. This would be a good addition to your journal or scrapbook if you chose to do one. If it would make you feel better, set the garden of lack on fire and watch it burn. You will then have only the garden of abundance to enjoy.

Well my blogging friends I haven't been keeping you posted on my progress and yesterday morning I weighed in at 215.5; I started at 223 and reported that I was going to go in 10 lb. increments so my first goal is nearly reached. I have one more week so I should be close if not there. I will be making another graph for a 10 lb. loss and continue to weigh in on Mondays and Thursdays. I have to figure out how to get a picture up - will work on that. I see some of you standing in front of a full length mirror for that. I don't have one but I can go to our Wellness Center - they have mirrors everywhere. It isn't the emotional roller coaster it used to be so I really don't have anything to vent so much. I would rather be supportive to those of you who are really fighting an emotional battle as well as a physical one.
